Septic Tank Emptying & Drainage in Surrey

Septic tanks on the Weald clay, treatment plants in the Surrey Hills, and drains and pump stations from Sunbury to the Sussex border.

Surrey is home for us. Our office is in Smallfield, near Horley, and our tankers are based a few miles away in Copthorne, so towns like Horley, Redhill, Reigate and Oxted are on our doorstep. From there our crews cover the whole county most days, with our own tankers and engineers.

Surrey looks green and gentle, but its drainage is anything but uniform. The south is heavy Weald clay where drainage fields flood every winter. Across the middle run the sandy greensand hills and the chalk of the North Downs, much of it in the Surrey Hills. The north is London Clay and the Thames floodplain, with big homes, basements and business parks.

Every town below has its own page explaining what we see there and which villages we cover. Wherever you are, you get the same team, the same paperwork and the same 24-hour phone line.

Local knowledge

What drainage looks like in Surrey

Clay, sand, chalk and river gravels, all in one county.

  • Weald clay in the south

Around Horley, Lingfield, Newdigate and Capel, heavy clay drains slowly. Drainage fields struggle in wet winters and many older homes still rely on cesspits.

  • Greensand hills

From Reigate to Dorking, Godalming and Haslemere, sandy greensand usually drains well, but steep lanes and long drives make access part of the job.

  • The chalk of the North Downs

Around Caterham, Banstead and the Downs villages, the chalk drains freely but supplies drinking water, so private systems must work properly.

  • London Clay in the north

In Epsom, Esher, Cobham and Leatherhead, the clay shrinks and swells with the seasons, cracking older drains.

  • The Thames and the Wey

Chertsey, Weybridge and Sunbury sit on low gravels where river and groundwater flooding can fill basements, chambers and tanks in very wet winters.

  • Surrey Hills National Landscape

Large parts of the county are protected landscape, so new or replacement drainage can need careful planning.

Questions answered

Surrey septic tank and drainage FAQs

Where are you based?

Our office is at Rough Beech Court in Smallfield, near Horley, and our tankers are kept at our yard in Copthorne, just over the West Sussex border. Surrey is home ground for us.

Do you cover the whole of Surrey?

Yes. Our crews work across the county most days, from Oxted and Caterham in the east to Farnham, Camberley and Haslemere in the west, and from Sunbury and Esher down to the Sussex border.

My drainage field floods every winter. Is that normal?

On the Weald clay in the south of the county, it’s common. Clay holds water, so fields can be saturated for months. Regular emptying keeps solids out of the field; if it never recovers, a survey will show whether it needs extending or replacing.

Do I need planning permission for a new treatment plant in the Surrey Hills?

Sometimes. Check with your local council before work starts, and make sure the system meets the Environment Agency’s General Binding Rules or has a permit.

Who looks after the pump station on my estate?

If the water company hasn’t adopted it, usually the management company. We service estate and private pump stations across Surrey and respond 24/7 if the alarm goes off.
