See it happen

What happens when a pump fails?

Choose a scenario to see how a twin pump station copes when a pump fails, and what happens when both do. It’s why we take alarms seriously.

How a twin pump station works Cross-section of a pump station chamber with two pumps and four float switches. Wastewater flows in and the level rises. When it lifts the start float, one pump switches on and pumps the chamber down until the stop float drops. The chamber fills again and the other pump takes the next turn, so the pumps share the work. Above the start float are a standby float, which brings in the second pump if the level keeps rising, and a high-level alarm float. 1 2 PUMP LAMPS Pump 1 Pump 2 1 2 6543 7 8

  1. 1InletWastewater from the property flows into the chamber.
  2. 2Duty and standby pumpsTwo pumps take turns, so they share the work and one is always ready if the other fails.
  3. 3Stop floatWhen the level drops below it, the running pump switches off.
  4. 4Start floatWhen the water lifts it, the next pump in turn switches on.
  5. 5Standby floatIf the level keeps rising, it brings in the second pump to help.
  6. 6High-level alarm floatThe last line of defence. It sets off the alarm beacon if the level gets this high.
  7. 7Control panelSwitches the pumps, swaps them over after every run and shows which one is working.
  8. 8Rising mainThe pipe the pumps push the waste through, on its way to the sewer.

On the day

What happens on a repair call-out

  1. We assess the problem

We find out whether it’s mechanical, electrical or a blockage, and make sure the chamber isn’t going to overflow.

  2. We make it safe

Power is isolated before we enter the chamber or handle pumps and controls.

  3. We repair or replace

We fix the fault, replacing pumps, floats, valves or panel parts where needed.

  4. We test and explain

We test the station, check the float levels and tell you what caused the problem and how to stop it happening again.

Why Clearmasters

Why call Clearmasters?

When a pump station fails, you want someone who answers the phone and turns up. We’re on call around the clock, and we can bring a tanker to keep the level down while we repair it.

Many breakdowns are caused by rags and fat in the chamber, so regular pump station emptying and servicing help prevent the next one. We also repair and replace control panels.

We do this work across Surrey, West Sussex, East Sussex, Kent, Hampshire and London, with tankers and engineers in each area most days.

Questions answered

Pump station repair FAQs

Do you offer emergency pump station repairs?

Yes. We’re available 24/7, 365 days a year. Call 03333 233577 out of hours.

Why do pumps fail?

The most common cause is rags and wipes wrapping around the impeller. Wear, float faults, electrical problems and sludge build-up are the others. Regular servicing and emptying prevent most of them.

Do you repair or replace pumps?

Both. If a repair is safe and good value, we’ll repair it. If not, we’ll replace it with the right pump for your station.

Can you repair control panels and alarms?

Yes. We find and fix control panel faults, alarms, floats and level sensors, and can replace old panels.

What can I do while I wait for you?

Use as little water as possible: no baths, showers, washing machines or dishwashers. Don’t lift the chamber cover or try to run the pumps yourself.

How do I stop it happening again?

Only flush the three P’s: pee, poo and paper. And have the pump station serviced and emptied regularly.
