Why schools are different
Hundreds of users, and a fixed timetable
A school’s drainage goes from flat out to almost nothing several times a year, and work can’t get in the way of teaching.
Heavy daily use
Hundreds of pupils, a busy kitchen and sports facilities, all on the same drains.
Term times and holidays
Planned work fits around the school year, with the bigger jobs saved for the holidays.
Safety and paperwork
RAMS, insurance and training records before anyone is on site.
Rural systems
Many village and rural schools have their own pump station or treatment plant.

School kitchens
Hundreds of meals a day means fat, oil and grease. A properly emptied grease separator protects every drain downstream.
- Regular grease separator emptying
- Jetting of the kitchen drain run
- Staff briefing on fat and food waste
Pupil and staff toilets
Paper towels, wipes and the odd unexpected object cause most toilet block blockages.
- Bins in every toilet, including for sanitary products
- Planned jetting of toilet block runs
- Fast response when a block has to close
Changing rooms and sports facilities
Showers, mud from pitches and silt from all-weather surfaces end up in the drains and gullies.
- Silt traps and gullies cleared
- Shower drains jetted
- Surface water drains checked before winter
Pump stations and treatment plants
Many rural schools have their own pump station or treatment plant, sized for a full school and quiet in the holidays.
- Servicing and desludging planned for the holidays
- Alarm testing
- Effluent sampling where a permit requires it

Questions answered
Questions from school business managers
Can you do drainage work during the school holidays?
Yes. We plan servicing, surveys and bigger jobs such as repairs and drain lining for half terms and the holidays, when the site is quiet.
Can you visit outside school hours during term?
Yes. Short jobs such as grease separator emptying can be done early in the morning before pupils arrive, and we agree times and routes with your site team.
Can you supply RAMS and insurance documents?
Yes. We can supply risk assessments and method statements (RAMS), insurance certificates and training records on request, before anyone comes on site.
Do you work for academy trusts with several schools?
Yes. We can set up planned maintenance across several sites, invoice each school separately and quote your purchase order numbers.
How often should a school kitchen grease separator be emptied?
It depends on its size and how many meals you serve, but BS EN 1825 calls for grease separators to be emptied at least monthly. We set a schedule that suits your kitchen.
What should we do if toilets back up during the school day?
Close the affected toilets, stop using water in that block and call us. For an emergency, our 24/7 line is 03333 233577.
Do you service school pump stations and treatment plants?
Yes. We service, repair and empty pump stations and treatment plants, and plan the main work for the holidays.
Can you survey our drains before building work?
Yes. A CCTV survey will show the route and condition of your drains before an extension or new building, so there are no surprises.
