Pump Station Maintenance in Billingshurst

Servicing, repairs and emptying for private pump stations at homes, estates and business sites in and around Billingshurst.

The land around Billingshurst mostly has gentle slopes, and that makes gravity drainage hard work. When a house, a barn conversion or a group of homes sits below the nearest sewer, or a long way from it, a pump station is often the only practical way to move the sewage. They’re more common here than many people expect.

The parish population has grown by around 40 per cent since 2001, and large new developments have been added to the village. Some newer estates rely on a pumping station run by a management company rather than the water company, at least until it’s adopted. Residents often don’t know who is responsible until the alarm sounds.

We service pump stations of all sizes, from a single pump serving one cottage to twin-pump stations on estates and industrial units. Our engineers hold confined space entry certificates, so they can work safely in the wet well, and we answer alarm call-outs around the clock. Tankers can empty a full wet well while a fault is put right.

What's included

What our engineers do on site

A thorough service, recorded in writing.

  • Non-return valves

We check the valves stop sewage running back into the chamber after each pump cycle.

  • Floats and brackets

Floats are checked for free movement, and their brackets and chains for wear and corrosion.

  • Every pump run and tested

Each pump is run and checked. On twin-pump stations we make sure both the duty and standby pumps work.

  • Control panel checked

The panel is checked for faults, correct settings and anything likely to make it trip.

  • Run times and starts

We look at how often the pumps start and how long they run, which can show leaks, infiltration or wear.

  • Wet well cleaned

Rags, fat and silt are cleared out, with the chamber emptied by tanker where needed.

Who looks after your pump station?

Shared pump stations that were connected to the public sewer before July 2011 were generally transferred to Southern Water in 2016. Single-house stations, and many on newer estates that haven’t been adopted yet, are still private, so the owner or management company has to keep them maintained.

If you live on a newer development around Billingshurst, your property documents or service charge statement should say who holds responsibility. Whoever it is, a regular service is what stops a pump failure turning into sewage in the garden. If nobody seems to know, we can inspect the station and tell you what’s there.

Planned servicing

Most domestic pump stations are serviced every six or twelve months, and busier stations on estates or business sites more often. A regular visit catches worn parts and build-up before they cause a breakdown.

We’ll remind you when the next service is due.

Questions answered

Pump station servicing FAQs

Do you service pump stations on Billingshurst’s newer estates?

Yes. We work for management companies and residents’ groups as well as individual homeowners. We can service the station on a regular contract, keep a record of every visit and attend alarm call-outs at any hour. You also get a written report after each service, which is useful for your own records.

My pump station is noisy. Is that a problem?

New noises such as grinding, rattling or a pump running far longer than usual are worth checking. They can mean a worn bearing, a blockage or a valve that isn’t closing. Call us before it fails.

Can you replace pumps and control panels?

Yes. We supply and fit replacement pumps, floats and control panels, and our confined space teams handle any work inside the chamber.

Why would a farmhouse near Shipley need a pump station?

Usually because the house sits lower than its tank, plant or sewer, or the outlet is too far away for a gravity pipe to keep a steady fall. Barn conversions are a common example, as the buildings were never planned around drainage. A small pump chamber lifts the waste to where it needs to go.

Why do the pumps keep tripping?

Common causes are wipes and rags wrapping around the impellers, worn pumps, damp in the kiosk or a fault in the panel. A service usually finds the cause, and we’ll explain how to stop it happening again.

The pump station alarm is going off. What should I do?

Stop using water as much as you can and call us on 03333 233566. Don’t open the chamber yourself. Tell us what the control panel shows, and we’ll come out to find the fault.
