Septic Tank & Cesspit Emptying in Billingshurst

Septic tanks and cesspits pumped out for homes, farms and businesses in Billingshurst and the Low Weald villages around it.

The village of Billingshurst is largely on mains drainage. Step out along the lanes, though, and things change quickly. Farmhouses on the way to Adversane and Coolham, cottages around Shipley and Five Oaks, and homes in the countryside beyond Wisborough Green, Kirdford and Loxwood often still have a septic tank or cesspit in the garden.

The ground is the main thing to understand here. Billingshurst sits on Weald Clay, a heavy soil that lets water through slowly and stays wet for much of the winter. A septic tank only works if the liquid leaving it can soak away, and on clay that takes time. If solids build up and wash into the drainage field, the pipes clog and the field stops draining altogether.

That’s why regular emptying matters more on this ground than on lighter soils. We pump tanks and cesspits out with our own tankers, check the inlet and outlet while we’re there, and leave a waste transfer note for every load. Plenty of customers here are on a regular schedule, so the tank never gets too full.

What's included

What happens on the day

Every empty follows the same routine, whatever the size of the tank.

  • Tidy and careful

Hoses are laid neatly and anything we spill is cleaned up before we leave.

  • A straight answer

If we see a cracked wall, a missing baffle or a blocked outlet, we tell you plainly and explain what can be done.

  • Waste taken away legally

Everything we remove goes to a licensed treatment site, and you get a waste transfer note for your records.

  • A reminder when it’s due

If you’d like one, our office will get in touch when your next empty comes round.

  • Advice on your drainage field

If the tank is backing up because the soakaway or drainage field can’t cope, we’ll tell you so you’re not paying for empties that won’t fix it.

  • Inlet and outlet cleared

Every tanker carries jetting kit, so a blocked inlet or outlet pipe can be cleared on the same visit.

Weald Clay and wet drainage fields

Soil surveys around Billingshurst describe the ground as seasonally waterlogged clay, with thin bands of sandstone running through it. In practice, a drainage field can work happily all summer and then struggle from November to March, when the clay is full and the water has nowhere to go.

If your drains slow down every winter, emptying the tank buys time but won’t cure a failing field. We can look at the field and tell you honestly whether it needs repairing or replacing. On this ground, a new field usually has to be bigger than the old one to cope.

Septic tank or cesspit?

A septic tank separates the solids and lets the liquid drain away to a soakaway or drainage field, so it only needs emptying when the sludge builds up. A cesspit is sealed and simply fills up, so it needs emptying far more often.

Questions answered

Your emptying questions answered

Are the villages around Billingshurst on mains drainage?

Some village centres are, but plenty of the farms, cottages and hamlets in between aren’t. The quickest check is your water bill. If there’s no charge for sewerage or wastewater, your home almost certainly drains to a septic tank, cesspit or treatment plant. If you still can’t find it, we can trace the drains for you.

I can’t find my tank. Can you?

Often, yes. Tell us about any manhole covers or where the drains seem to run. If it’s well hidden, we can use CCTV and drain tracing to find the tank and the pipes leading to it.

My cesspit fills up very fast. Is that normal?

Cesspits fill quickly because nothing drains out. But if yours fills much faster than it used to, rainwater or groundwater may be getting in, or the tank may be damaged. A survey will find out which.

Why does my cesspit near Billingshurst fill faster in winter?

A sound cesspit shouldn’t take in any extra water, so a big jump in winter usually means rain or groundwater is getting in. Around here that’s common with older brick pits and loose cover seals sitting in waterlogged clay. It’s worth having it checked, because otherwise you’re paying to take away rainwater.

Will emptying fix a smell from my tank?

Sometimes. If the tank is simply full, emptying it will help. If the smell comes from a blocked outlet or a failing drainage field, we’ll tell you what we find so you can put the cause right.

How big a tanker do you send?

Our tankers range from 2,000 to 4,000 gallons. We choose the size to suit your tank and the access, so tell us about narrow lanes or soft ground when you book.
