Treatment Plant Servicing in Billingshurst

Annual servicing, repairs and desludging for sewage treatment plants at homes, farms and conversions around Billingshurst.

Treatment plants have become the usual choice around Billingshurst whenever an old septic tank needs replacing or a new home is built away from the sewer. You’ll find them at barn conversions, rebuilt farmhouses and small groups of new homes in the countryside between Shipley, Kirdford and Loxwood.

There’s a practical reason for that. On heavy clay, a septic tank and drainage field often can’t get rid of enough water, so many plants send their treated water to a ditch or stream instead. The Environment Agency’s General Binding Rules don’t allow a septic tank to discharge that way, but a properly working treatment plant can.

That only holds while the plant is doing its job. Our engineers check the blower, pumps, diffusers and control panel, look at the water coming out, and arrange desludging when it’s due. They carry the most common parts, so many repairs are sorted on the first visit. Desludging can usually be done by one of our tankers on the same day.

What's included

Inside a treatment plant service

A thorough check of the air, the pumps, the panel and the sludge.

  • Wear parts spotted early

Worn diaphragms, noisy bearings and tired pumps are flagged before they fail.

  • High-level alarm

The alarm is tested so it will warn you if the plant starts to back up.

  • Control panel

We check the panel, its settings and any warning lights, and make sure it’s safe.

  • Outfall and drainage field

We look at where the treated water goes, so problems with the outlet or drainage field are picked up early.

  • Sludge levels measured

We measure the sludge and arrange desludging when it’s due, often on the same visit.

  • Baffles and pipework

We check the baffles, inlet and outlet are clear and undamaged, so waste moves through the chambers properly.

Ditches, streams and the River Arun

The fields around Billingshurst are crossed by ditches and small streams that drain towards the River Arun, and further west the Wey and Arun Canal runs past Loxwood. Under the rules, a plant’s discharge has to go to a watercourse that normally flows all year round.

Plenty of field ditches here run dry by late summer. If your plant outlets to one of them, it may not meet the rules, and you could need a different outlet or a permit. We can find where yours goes and talk you through the options.

Repairs on the first visit where we can

The parts that fail most are the blower, pumps, floats, alarms and control panels. Our engineers carry the most common parts, so many repairs are finished on the first visit instead of another day.

If the alarm is sounding, the plant has gone quiet or it has started to smell, call us and we’ll send an engineer to find the fault.

Questions answered

Your treatment plant questions answered

Can my treatment plant near Billingshurst discharge to a field ditch?

Often, yes, as long as the ditch normally flows throughout the year and the plant is working properly. A ditch that dries out every summer usually isn’t enough under the General Binding Rules. If you’re not sure where your outlet runs or whether it qualifies, we can trace it and give you an honest view.

Do you install new treatment plants?

Yes. If your old plant or septic tank needs replacing, we can quote for a new treatment plant and, if needed, a new drainage field.

My plant smells. What does that mean?

A healthy plant shouldn’t smell much. A strong smell often means the blower has stopped and the bacteria have died off, or the sludge is overdue for removal. Call us and we’ll check it.

I’m replacing an old septic tank near Kirdford. Do I need a treatment plant?

If the tank drains to a ditch or stream, yes, because septic tanks can no longer discharge to surface water. If it drains to a working drainage field, you may be able to keep a septic tank. On clay that drains poorly, though, a treatment plant is often the more reliable choice. We’re happy to advise before you decide.

How often should a treatment plant be serviced?

Most domestic plants should be serviced at least once a year, and some makers recommend every six months. Your plant’s manual will say, or we can tell you when we see it.

Do you service my make of plant?

We service and repair the common makes, including Klargester, Conder, Marsh, Graf, Tricel and WPL Diamond. If you’re not sure what you have, send a photo of the lid or panel when you get in touch.
