Treatment Plant Servicing & Repairs in Reigate

Yearly servicing, repairs and desludging for sewage treatment plants in the countryside around Reigate.

South of Reigate, a lot of old septic tanks have been swapped for treatment plants. On the clay around Leigh and Sidlow, many older tanks drained straight into a ditch, which the General Binding Rules no longer allow. A treatment plant cleans the water well enough to go into a ditch or stream legally, as long as it’s serviced and working.

Plants are also common at converted barns and stables, at newer houses built away from the sewer, and where a farmhouse and its cottages share one system. Some sit at the end of long private drives, so we check access before we set off. Shared systems also need a clear arrangement for who books and pays for the service.

Each service covers the air blower, diffusers, pumps and alarm, and you get a written report afterwards. Our engineers keep the parts that wear out most often on the van. If an alarm sounds, the plant starts to smell or the outlet looks cloudy, call us and we’ll send someone to find the fault and put it right.

What's included

What a service covers

Our engineers go through the whole plant, not just what you can see from the lid.

  • Blower and air supply

We check the blower is running correctly and that air is reaching the diffusers, because that’s what keeps the bacteria working.

  • Outfall and drainage field

We look at where the treated water goes, so problems with the outlet or drainage field are picked up early.

  • A written service record

You get a record of the visit and our advice, handy for your files or when you sell the property.

  • Control panel

We check the panel, its settings and any warning lights, and make sure it’s safe.

  • Pumps and floats

Any pumps are run and tested, and floats are checked to make sure they move freely.

  • Wear parts spotted early

Worn diaphragms, noisy bearings and tired pumps are flagged before they fail.

Keeping your plant working

Ditches that feed the Mole

The Wallace Brook drains much of Reigate and flows to the Mole, and many of the field ditches around Leigh and Sidlow end up there too. Treated water from a plant joins those streams quickly. When a plant is neglected, the discharge carries solids and smells into them. Over time that leaves grey deposits and a smell in the ditch, which neighbours and the Environment Agency tend to notice.

The simplest protection is a yearly service, plus desludging when the engineer advises it. If your control panel shows faults or keeps tripping, we also carry out control panel repairs.

Desludging

Every treatment plant builds up sludge, and it needs removing before it goes beyond what the plant can hold, usually at least once a year. Leave it too long and solids can carry over into the final chamber and out to your drainage field or watercourse.

We can desludge on the same visit as your service, using our own tankers.

Questions answered

Treatment plant servicing FAQs

My septic tank near Sidlow drains into a ditch. What can I do?

Under the General Binding Rules, a septic tank can’t discharge straight to a ditch or stream. The usual fixes are a treatment plant, or a drainage field if the ground allows. On the clay south of Reigate, a treatment plant is often the practical choice. We can survey the system and talk you through it.

What’s the difference between servicing and emptying?

A service checks the mechanical and electrical parts: blower, pumps, floats, alarm and panel. Emptying, or desludging, removes the sludge that builds up. Most plants need both, and we can do them on the same visit.

How often should a treatment plant be serviced?

Most domestic plants should be serviced at least once a year, and some makers recommend every six months. Your plant’s manual will say, or we can tell you when we see it.

Does the clay around Reigate affect my treatment plant?

Not the plant itself, but it does affect where the treated water goes. Clay drains slowly, so an outlet to a soakaway can back up in winter. If the outlet chamber is full or the alarm trips after heavy rain, the discharge route probably needs looking at.

Is servicing a legal requirement?

If your plant discharges to the ground or a watercourse, the General Binding Rules say it must be maintained by someone competent in line with the manufacturer’s instructions. Regular servicing is the simplest way to show that.

Can I take over a plant when I buy a house?

Yes, and it’s worth booking a service soon after you move in, so you know its condition and get a fresh service record. Ask the seller for any manuals and past records too.
