Treatment Plant Servicing & Repairs in Shere

Yearly services, sludge removal and fault repairs for treatment plants around Shere and along the Tillingbourne valley.

The Tillingbourne flows through Gomshall and Shere, then on through Albury and Chilworth to join the Wey at Shalford. It’s a spring-fed stream that once powered mills and fed watercress beds along the valley. Treatment plants that discharge to it, or to the ditches that run into it, need to be working properly.

Plants are common at converted barns and farm buildings in the valley, and at houses on the slopes where a new system has replaced an older tank. Around Peaslake and Holmbury St Mary, some sit low in steep gardens, so a pump is needed to lift the treated water away. Others serve a farmhouse and a group of converted outbuildings together.

We work on most makes of plant. A typical visit covers the blower, the pumps, the control panel and a sludge reading, followed by a written report. Because they carry the parts that fail most often, many faults can be put right there and then. If the plant needs desludging, we can do that on the same day.

What's included

What we check at a service

The parts that keep a plant treating properly, and the ones that tend to fail.

  • Filters and media

Where your plant has filters or media, we check they aren’t blocked or clogged.

  • Baffles and pipework

We check the baffles, inlet and outlet are clear and undamaged, so waste moves through the chambers properly.

  • Sludge levels measured

We measure the sludge and arrange desludging when it’s due, often on the same visit.

  • Pumps and floats

Any pumps are run and tested, and floats are checked to make sure they move freely.

  • The final effluent

We look at what’s leaving the plant, which is a quick guide to whether it’s treating properly.

  • Wear parts spotted early

Worn diaphragms, noisy bearings and tired pumps are flagged before they fail.

Springs, groundwater and the greensand

Much of Shere parish is Lower Greensand, a sandy rock that holds a lot of groundwater and feeds springs along the valley. Water moves through it easily, which is good for drainage but means poor effluent spreads easily too. Extra care is needed where a system is near a spring, well or borehole.

If you’re planning a new or replacement plant, sort out the discharge route early. We can design and fit one through our treatment plant installation service. The General Binding Rules or a permit may apply, depending on where the water goes and how much there is, so it’s worth checking before any digging starts.

Repairs on the first visit where we can

The parts that fail most are the blower, pumps, floats, alarms and control panels. Our engineers carry the most common parts, so many repairs are finished on the first visit instead of another day.

If the alarm is sounding, the plant has gone quiet or it has started to smell, call us and we’ll send an engineer to find the fault.

Questions answered

Treatment plant questions

Can my treatment plant near Gomshall discharge into the Tillingbourne?

It can, if it complies with the General Binding Rules and the discharge is within their limits. Some sites need an environmental permit instead, so check before you install. Once it’s in, yearly servicing and desludging keep the discharge clean enough to protect the river.

Is servicing a legal requirement?

If your plant discharges to the ground or a watercourse, the General Binding Rules say it must be maintained by someone competent in line with the manufacturer’s instructions. Regular servicing is the simplest way to show that.

Do you install new treatment plants?

Yes. If your old plant or septic tank needs replacing, we can quote for a new treatment plant and, if needed, a new drainage field.

Why does my treatment plant in Peaslake need a pump?

Some homes around Peaslake are built into the slopes, so the plant or its outlet sits below where the treated water has to go. A small pump lifts it out. If that pump fails, the plant can flood, so it should be checked at every service along with the rest of the plant.

How often should a treatment plant be serviced?

Most domestic plants should be serviced at least once a year, and some makers recommend every six months. Your plant’s manual will say, or we can tell you when we see it.

My treatment plant alarm is going off. What should I do?

Cut your water use right down and call us. Don’t switch the plant off unless it’s unsafe. Most alarms mean a blower, pump or float has failed, and we can usually find the fault on the first visit.
