Septic Tank Emptying in Shere

Septic tanks and cesspits emptied for households in Shere, Gomshall, Peaslake and the Hurtwood villages.

Shere parish runs from the chalk downs in the north, across the Tillingbourne at Shere and Gomshall, and up into the sandy hills around Peaslake and Holmbury St Mary. Unlike its neighbour Abinger, it never reaches the Weald clay. Most of it sits on the Lower Greensand. The parish is in Guildford borough and is part of the Surrey Hills National Landscape.

That sandy ground drains well, which suits soakaways and drainage fields. The catch is that effluent can pass through it quickly, so a tank that lets solids escape can foul a field, or reach the groundwater, before anyone notices. Emptying the tank regularly is what stops that happening.

Plenty of houses in the wooded lanes around Peaslake, Holmbury St Mary and Burrows Cross are on private drainage. We empty septic tanks and cesspits there and across the rest of the parish, with tankers from 2,000 to 4,000 gallons, and we answer 03333 233566 at all hours. If you’re unsure when your tank was last emptied, we’ll start a sensible schedule from the first visit.

What's included

What you get with every empty

It’s more than just a pump-out.

  • Lids put back securely

Covers are refitted and left safe, so there’s nothing for children, pets or livestock to fall into.

  • Long hose runs

We carry enough hose to reach tanks well away from the drive, through gardens and across paddocks.

  • A straight answer

If we see a cracked wall, a missing baffle or a blocked outlet, we tell you plainly and explain what can be done.

  • A reminder when it’s due

If you’d like one, our office will get in touch when your next empty comes round.

  • A full pump-out

The tank is emptied into one of our own tankers, which hold between 2,000 and 4,000 gallons.

  • Tidy and careful

Hoses are laid neatly and anything we spill is cleaned up before we leave.

A Clearmasters tanker emptying a tank at a rural property

Peaslake and the Hurtwood

Peaslake lies in a valley between Holmbury Hill and Pitch Hill, surrounded by the heath and pine woods of the Hurtwood. Many homes are reached by steep, narrow lanes or long drives through the trees. We send a tanker that fits and run long hoses where the tank is well away from the lane.

Tree roots are a common nuisance in these woods, as they find their way into soakaway pipes and slow them down. If your system drains sluggishly even after an empty, soakaway maintenance can clear and check the pipes.

Getting the tanker to your tank

Our tankers are big vehicles, so it helps to tell us about narrow lanes, weak bridges, low branches or soft verges when you book. We’ll send the right size of tanker and plan the hose run.

If the lid is buried under lawn or gravel, uncovering it before we arrive saves time on the day.

Questions answered

Septic tank and cesspit questions

Does the greensand around Shere help soakaways?

Mostly, yes. Sandy ground drains much faster than clay, so a well-built soakaway in Shere or Peaslake usually copes. The downside is that poorly settled waste moves through sand quickly too. Keep the tank emptied so that only liquid reaches the soakaway.

How do I know my septic tank needs emptying?

The usual signs are slow sinks and toilets, gurgling pipes, a smell near the tank or wet patches over the drainage field. If you don’t know when it was last done, book an empty and start a regular schedule from there.

Should I add anything to my septic tank?

Generally no. A healthy tank works on its own bacteria. The best thing you can do is keep wipes, fat, oils and strong chemicals out of it and have it emptied regularly.

Can you get a tanker into Shere’s narrow village streets?

Yes, with a bit of planning. The centre of Shere has tight streets and old cottages close to the road. Tell us where the tank is and where we can park, and we’ll bring a suitable tanker and enough hose to reach it without blocking the street for long.

My cesspit fills up very fast. Is that normal?

Cesspits fill quickly because nothing drains out. But if yours fills much faster than it used to, rainwater or groundwater may be getting in, or the tank may be damaged. A survey will find out which.

How big a tanker do you send?

Our tankers range from 2,000 to 4,000 gallons. We choose the size to suit your tank and the access, so tell us about narrow lanes or soft ground when you book.
