Treatment Plant Servicing & Repairs in Edenbridge

Servicing, repairs and desludging for sewage treatment plants serving homes, barns and farms around Edenbridge.

Around Edenbridge, a treatment plant is often the answer where the clay won’t take a soakaway. Barn conversions on old farmsteads, new homes on rural plots and properties where an old septic tank has been replaced commonly have one. Many send their treated water into a ditch or stream that eventually finds its way to the River Eden.

The Eden flows through the town and on past Hever to join the Medway at Penshurst. Treated effluent from the Edenbridge sewage works goes into it too, so the river already carries plenty. A well-run plant upstream plays a small part in keeping it clean, while a neglected one can do real harm. Grey, cloudy water or sewage fungus in a ditch below a plant is a sure sign something has gone wrong.

We service, repair and desludge plants of all the main makes, and the parts that fail most often travel on our engineers’ vans. Every service ends with a written report, and our office can let you know when the next is due.

What's included

Inside a treatment plant service

A thorough check of the air, the pumps, the panel and the sludge.

  • Sludge levels measured

We measure the sludge and arrange desludging when it’s due, often on the same visit.

  • Filters and media

Where your plant has filters or media, we check they aren’t blocked or clogged.

  • Blower and air supply

We check the blower is running correctly and that air is reaching the diffusers, because that’s what keeps the bacteria working.

  • Outfall and drainage field

We look at where the treated water goes, so problems with the outlet or drainage field are picked up early.

  • A written service record

You get a record of the visit and our advice, handy for your files or when you sell the property.

  • High-level alarm

The alarm is tested so it will warn you if the plant starts to back up.

Keeping your plant working

Ditches, streams and the General Binding Rules

The deadline for septic tanks discharging straight to a watercourse to be upgraded or replaced passed at the start of 2020. Around Edenbridge, where so many rural properties drain to field ditches, that rule touches a lot of homes.

A plant only stays compliant if it is maintained to the manufacturer’s instructions and the sludge is removed regularly by a registered carrier. Our service reports and waste transfer notes give you the evidence. When sludge is building up, we can book treatment plant desludging alongside the service. Keep the paperwork somewhere safe, as buyers’ solicitors often ask for it.

Repairs on the first visit where we can

The parts that fail most are the blower, pumps, floats, alarms and control panels. Our engineers carry the most common parts, so many repairs are finished on the first visit instead of another day.

If the alarm is sounding, the plant has gone quiet or it has started to smell, call us and we’ll send an engineer to find the fault.

Questions answered

Treatment plant servicing FAQs

Can my treatment plant discharge to a ditch near Edenbridge?

Usually, yes, provided it meets the General Binding Rules and the ditch flows for most of the year. On the clay around Edenbridge that’s often a better option than a drainage field. A ditch that runs dry in summer is treated differently, so check before you rely on it.

Can you get my plant working on the same visit?

Often, yes. Our engineers carry the most common parts, such as blowers and pumps, so many repairs are done there and then. For less common parts we’ll order them and come back.

Does the blower need to run all the time?

On most plants, yes. The blower keeps air flowing to the bacteria that treat the waste. If it stops for long, the plant stops treating properly and can start to smell.

Do treatment plants in the High Weald villages need anything different?

Around Cowden and the higher ground to the south, the land is hillier than the clay near the town, and the countryside is part of the High Weald National Landscape. The plant itself is serviced the same way, but planning for a new system or drainage field there can take longer.

How often should a treatment plant be serviced?

Most domestic plants should be serviced at least once a year, and some makers recommend every six months. Your plant’s manual will say, or we can tell you when we see it.

What’s the difference between servicing and emptying?

A service checks the mechanical and electrical parts: blower, pumps, floats, alarm and panel. Emptying, or desludging, removes the sludge that builds up. Most plants need both, and we can do them on the same visit.
