Pump Station Maintenance in East Grinstead

Planned servicing and round-the-clock repairs for pump stations at homes, small developments and business sites in and around East Grinstead.

The old centre of East Grinstead stands on a ridge, and as the town has spread, new homes have gone onto the slopes and valley sides around it. Gravity can’t always carry sewage from those plots up to the public sewer, so a pump station is fitted to push it there instead. Many owners only learn they have one when they buy the house.

You’ll find them serving single houses tucked below a lane, small groups of homes on infill plots, and business premises on the edge of town. A share of them now belong to the water company. Plenty of others are still private, which leaves the owner or a management company responsible for keeping them serviced.

A neglected station tends to give little warning. A worn pump, a float caught on debris or a tripped panel can stop it, and then the chamber fills. We service stations around East Grinstead, carry common spares, and answer alarm calls day and night, so a fault can be dealt with before it becomes a mess in the garden.

What's included

What we check at every visit

A full look at the parts that keep sewage moving.

  • Alarm tested

We test the high-level alarm so it will warn you before the chamber overflows.

  • Wet well cleaned

Rags, fat and silt are cleared out, with the chamber emptied by tanker where needed.

  • A written report

You get a record of what we found and anything that needs attention.

  • Cover and access

The chamber cover and its frame are checked so the station is safe to open and safe to walk past.

  • Floats and brackets

Floats are checked for free movement, and their brackets and chains for wear and corrosion.

  • Run times and starts

We look at how often the pumps start and how long they run, which can show leaks, infiltration or wear.

When something goes wrong

Steep plots and long rising mains

On hilly ground a pump may have to push sewage a long way uphill through a rising main. That puts more strain on the motor than a flat site would, and any rags or fat in the wet well make it worse. For stations like these, a regular service matters more than usual.

Wet woodland and clay soils can also let groundwater seep into older chambers. If your station seems to run almost constantly, that may be why, and it’s worth having it looked at before the pumps wear out.

New pumps and control panels

When a pump is worn out or a panel keeps tripping, we can supply and fit a replacement. We’ll explain why it failed, so the new one lasts.

Questions answered

Pump station questions

Why does my East Grinstead home have a pump station when the neighbours don’t?

Usually because your house sits lower than the sewer it connects to. In a hilly town like this, two homes on the same road can be at quite different levels. If yours is below the sewer, the pump station lifts the sewage up so it can flow away.

The pump station alarm is going off. What should I do?

Stop using water as much as you can and call us on 03333 233566. Don’t open the chamber yourself. Tell us what the control panel shows, and we’ll come out to find the fault.

What shouldn’t go down the drain to a pump station?

Wet wipes, sanitary products, cotton buds, fat and cooking oil cause most blockages. Even wipes sold as flushable can wrap around pump impellers. Keeping them out is the cheapest way to avoid call-outs.

My pump station runs constantly in wet weather. Why?

Rainwater or groundwater is probably getting in. On the clay and sloping ground around East Grinstead, water can seep through cracked chambers or arrive from wrongly connected downpipes. It wears the pumps out faster than normal, so ask us to find where it’s coming from.

Can you replace pumps and control panels?

Yes. We supply and fit replacement pumps, floats and control panels, and our confined space teams handle any work inside the chamber.

Do you empty pump stations?

Yes. We empty and desilt wet wells with our own tankers, either on their own or as part of a service visit.
