Treatment Plant Servicing & Repairs in Godalming

Servicing, repairs and desludging for sewage treatment plants at homes, conversions and farms in the river valleys around Godalming.

Godalming sits where the River Ock meets the River Wey, and a lot of the countryside around it drains towards one or the other. Many treatment plants in this area send their cleaned water to a stream, ditch or one of the rivers rather than into the ground.

You’ll find plants at farm buildings turned into homes around Shackleford and Peper Harow, at larger houses rebuilt on old plots near Busbridge and Hambledon, and at places where an old septic tank had to be replaced to meet the rules. A plant is a working machine, with a blower, diffusers and often a pump, and it needs looking after every year. In some cases the plant came with the house and the new owners have no record of when it was last serviced. That’s worth sorting out soon after you move in.

Our engineers service and repair treatment plants around Godalming, clean and test every part and leave a written report. We can desludge the plant from our own tanker on the same visit.

What's included

What a service covers

Our engineers go through the whole plant, not just what you can see from the lid.

  • Control panel

We check the panel, its settings and any warning lights, and make sure it’s safe.

  • Lid and access

The lid, seals and fixings are checked so the plant stays safe and watertight.

  • High-level alarm

The alarm is tested so it will warn you if the plant starts to back up.

  • Baffles and pipework

We check the baffles, inlet and outlet are clear and undamaged, so waste moves through the chambers properly.

  • The final effluent

We look at what’s leaving the plant, which is a quick guide to whether it’s treating properly.

  • Pumps and floats

Any pumps are run and tested, and floats are checked to make sure they move freely.

Discharging to the Wey and the Ock

The Ock rises near Witley and joins the Wey at the west end of Godalming, while the Wey itself passes Elstead and Eashing on its way into town. If your plant discharges to either river, or to a brook that feeds them, the General Binding Rules apply. The plant has to be serviced to the maker’s schedule and must not cause pollution.

A plant that has stopped aerating sends cloudy, smelly water into the stream. That’s often the first thing a neighbour notices, so a yearly service saves awkward conversations as well as fines.

Staying within the rules

Treatment plants that discharge to the ground or to a watercourse must be maintained in line with the manufacturer’s instructions under the General Binding Rules, with the sludge removed regularly.

Your service record shows the plant has been looked after, which buyers and their solicitors often ask to see.

What our customers say

★★★★★

Clearmasters have emptied our Septic Tank for many years. It is not an easy placed tank to get to but the chaps manage perfectly. I find them very efficient, friendly and polite. Thank you Valerie Wise

So glad we found them. The team was professional, courteous and helpful. They came the next day and pricing is way more competitive than a national chain. Will be using them again in a year's time to service the pump. Thanks again!

Questions answered

Treatment plant questions

Our plant near Elstead discharges to the River Wey. What do we need to do?

Keep it serviced as the maker recommends, have it emptied by a registered waste carrier, and fix faults quickly. Those are conditions of the General Binding Rules for any plant discharging to a river. Keep your service reports too, as a buyer’s solicitor will ask for them when you sell.

My plant smells. What does that mean?

A healthy plant shouldn’t smell much. A strong smell often means the blower has stopped and the bacteria have died off, or the sludge is overdue for removal. Call us and we’ll check it.

What’s the difference between servicing and emptying?

A service checks the mechanical and electrical parts: blower, pumps, floats, alarm and panel. Emptying, or desludging, removes the sludge that builds up. Most plants need both, and we can do them on the same visit.

We’re converting a barn near Shackleford. Will we need a treatment plant?

If there’s no public sewer within reach, almost certainly. A septic tank alone can’t discharge to a watercourse, so a treatment plant is the usual choice for new homes in the countryside around Godalming. We install plants and can then look after them with a yearly service.

Do you service my make of plant?

We service and repair the common makes, including Klargester, Conder, Marsh, Graf, Tricel and WPL Diamond. If you’re not sure what you have, send a photo of the lid or panel when you get in touch.

Is servicing a legal requirement?

If your plant discharges to the ground or a watercourse, the General Binding Rules say it must be maintained by someone competent in line with the manufacturer’s instructions. Regular servicing is the simplest way to show that.
