Living beside the Lammas Lands
The Lammas Lands are the water meadows that separate Godalming from the river, and they flood in most wet winters. The town has seen serious floods in 1968, 1990, 2000, 2013 and 2020. Between Bridge Street and Catteshall the ground is river silt and sand, and the water table there rises quickly after heavy rain.
High groundwater can seep into chambers and keep pumps running for hours. If your station is on this low ground, regular checks of the pumps, floats and alarm make a real difference. We also look at the kiosk and panel, which can be damaged if water gets in.
