The range
Which Klargester do you have?
Kingspan Klargester make some of the most common treatment plants in the UK. They all break down sewage using aerobic bacteria, which need oxygen to work, but the three main ranges get that oxygen to the bacteria in quite different ways, so each needs a different service.
Your plant will also need regular desludging, and we can do both on the same visit. We service the other main makes too, including Tricel and Graf.
We do this work across Surrey, West Sussex, East Sussex, Kent, Hampshire and London, with tankers and engineers in each area most days.
Not sure which you have? The model name is usually on the lid or the control unit, or send us a photo and we’ll tell you.
How it works
How a Klargester BioDisc works
The BioDisc is one of the most recognisable plants around. Hover over or tap the numbers to see what each part does.
- 1Primary settlement tankSolids settle out before the liquid reaches the discs.
- 2Rotating discs (biozone)Bacteria grow on the discs, which turn slowly through the liquid and the air, cleaning the wastewater.
- 3Motor and gearboxTurn the disc pack via a belt drive. An alarm sounds if the rotor stops turning.
- 4Final settlement tankBacteria that drop off the discs settle here before the water leaves.
- 5OutletTreated effluent flows out to a drainage field or watercourse.
What we service
What a Klargester service involves
We follow Kingspan’s guidance for your model. Depending on the model, that includes:
BioDisc drive
Checking the motor, gearbox, belt and bearings, and that the rotor turns freely and the rotation alarm works.
Blowers and diffusers
On BioFicient and BioTec plants, cleaning or replacing the air filter and diaphragms and checking the diffusers.
Sludge and desludge advice
Measuring the sludge. Kingspan give maximum desludge intervals for each model, some as short as a few months.
Treatment check
Checking the biozone and the effluent leaving the plant, so we know it’s treating properly.
Alarms and controls
Testing alarms, control units and, on BioFicient plants, the sludge return.
Report
A clear record of what we found and did, for your files.
The rules
What the rules say about servicing
On the day
What happens on a Klargester service
We identify your model
BioDisc, BioTec or BioFicient, and the size, so we follow the right checklist.
We isolate and inspect
Power off, lids up, and a full look at the tank, drive or air system and pipework.
We service and test
We service the drive or air system, check the treatment and test the alarms.
We report back
We explain what we found and tell you when your next desludge is due.

Questions answered
Klargester servicing FAQs
How often should my Klargester be serviced?
Kingspan recommend an annual service by a properly trained engineer. Heavily used and commercial plants may need attention more often.
How often does a BioDisc need desludging?
Kingspan give a maximum interval for each model. For the smaller domestic BioDiscs it ranges from about 6 to 12 months, and larger models need it more often. We’ll check your model and measure the sludge on every service.
My BioDisc alarm is going off. What should I do?
The BioDisc has an alarm that goes off if the rotor stops turning. Call us. It’s often a drive belt, motor or gearbox problem, and the sooner it’s fixed, the less the bacteria on the discs suffer.
Can you empty a BioFicient?
Yes. On a BioFicient, only the primary tank should be desludged. Emptying the other chambers removes the media and the bacteria. Our tanker crews know which chamber to empty.
Is desludging part of a service?
No, desludging is done by one of our tankers and charged separately, but we can arrange it for the same visit. Your engineer will measure the sludge and tell you when it’s due.
Is servicing a legal requirement?
The Environment Agency’s rules say your plant must be operated in line with the manufacturer’s specification, and should be regularly maintained in line with their instructions by someone competent. If your discharge causes pollution, the first question you’ll be asked is when it was last serviced. A regular service is the simplest way to stay on the right side of the rules.
