Sewage Treatment Plant Servicing, Repairs & Emptying in Horsham

Servicing, repairs and desludging for domestic and commercial treatment plants across Horsham and its villages, covering all the main makes.

Sewage treatment plants are common around Horsham, particularly on newer rural homes, barn conversions and small developments that couldn't be connected to the mains. Unlike a septic tank, a treatment plant is a working machine. A blower pumps air into it so bacteria can break the waste down, and it has pumps, floats and a control panel that all need looking after.

Under the Environment Agency's General Binding Rules, the owner has to keep the plant maintained in line with the manufacturer’s instructions and have the sludge removed regularly. A regular service is the simplest way to stay on the right side of those rules, and it catches worn parts before they fail.

We service, repair and empty plants for homeowners, landlords and businesses across the Horsham district, usually in a single visit.

What's included

What a treatment plant service covers

Our engineers work through the whole plant, not just the parts you can see from the lid.

  • Blower and air supply

We check the blower is running properly and that air is reaching the diffusers, since this is what keeps the plant treating.

  • Pumps, floats and alarm

Any pumps are tested, floats are checked for free movement, and the high-level alarm is tested.

  • Control panel

We check the panel, settings and any warning messages, and make sure it's safe and working as it should.

  • Sludge levels

We measure the sludge and arrange desludging when it's needed, often on the same visit.

  • Final effluent

We look at what's leaving the plant, as a quick sign of whether it's treating properly.

  • A written record

You get a record of the service and our advice, which is useful for your own files or when you sell the property.

Repairs and emptying

A Clearmasters service van

Repairs on the first visit where we can

The parts that fail most often are the air blower, the control panel, pumps and alarms. Our engineers carry common spares on their vans, so where we can, we fit a replacement there and then instead of coming back another day.

If your plant has stopped working, the alarm is sounding or it has started to smell, give us a call and we'll get an engineer out to find the fault.

Desludging and emptying

Every treatment plant builds up sludge, and it needs removing before it goes beyond what the plant can hold, usually at least once a year. Leave it too long and solids can carry over into the final chamber and out into your drainage field or watercourse.

We can desludge on the same visit as your service, using our own tankers.

First of all the engineer attended site exactly on time and the slot had been within a couple of days of phoning. The required work was completed and the motor realigned to prevent future wear. The engineer also provided advice and a written report.

Questions answered

Treatment plant servicing FAQs

How often should a treatment plant be serviced?

Most manufacturers recommend a service at least once a year, and some plants benefit from more frequent visits. Your plant's manual will say what its maker recommends, and we can set up a schedule to match.

What's the difference between servicing and emptying?

Servicing is about keeping the plant working: checking the blower, pumps, floats, alarm and control panel. Emptying, or desludging, removes the sludge that builds up inside. Your plant needs both, and we can do them in the same visit.

Is servicing a legal requirement?

If your plant discharges to a drainage field or a watercourse, the General Binding Rules say it must be maintained by someone competent in line with the manufacturer's instructions, and the sludge removed before it goes beyond the plant's capacity. Keeping service records shows you've done this.

Do you service my make of treatment plant?

We service all the main makes, including Klargester, Conder, Marsh, Graf and Tricell. If you don't know which you have, tell us what's written on the lid or control panel.

My treatment plant alarm is going off. What should I do?

Reduce your water use and call us on 03333 233566. The alarm usually means the blower or a pump has stopped, or the level inside is too high. Don't open the control panel or try to reset it repeatedly; let an engineer find the cause.

Can you get my plant working again on the same day?

Often, yes. Our engineers carry the most common parts, such as blowers, so many repairs are finished on the first visit. If a less common part is needed, we'll tell you how long it will take to get.
