Septic Tank & Cesspit Emptying in Horsham

Routine and emergency emptying for septic tanks and cesspits across Horsham and its villages, carried out by our own crews in our own tankers.

If your home isn't connected to the mains, everything that goes down your sinks, toilets and drains ends up in a septic tank or cesspit, and sooner or later it has to be pumped out. We empty tanks for homes, farms and businesses right across the Horsham district, from Rudgwick in the west to Henfield in the east.

The two need slightly different care. A septic tank holds the solids and lets the liquid drain away to a soakaway or drainage field, so it only needs emptying when the sludge builds up. A cesspit has no outlet at all: it's a sealed holding tank, so it fills up with every flush and shower and needs emptying far more often.

Either way, you can book a one-off empty, go on a regular schedule so you never have to think about it, or call us at any hour if something's overflowing.

What's included

What happens when we empty your tank

Every empty follows the same routine, whether it's a small septic tank behind a cottage or a large cesspit on a farm.

  • A quick check first

Our operator looks at the level and condition of the tank before starting, so any problems are spotted straight away.

  • A full empty

The tank is pumped out into one of our tankers, which range from 2,000 to 4,000 gallons.

  • Pipes cleared if needed

Every tanker carries jetting kit, so blocked inlet or outlet pipes can be cleared on the same visit.

  • An honest opinion

If we see cracked walls, a damaged baffle or a blocked outlet, we'll tell you plainly and explain your options.

  • Legal disposal

The waste goes to a licensed treatment site, and you get a waste transfer note for your records.

  • A reminder next time

If you want one, our office will get in touch when your next empty is due.

Emptying frequency and cost

How often does it need emptying?

Most household septic tanks need emptying about once a year, although a large household with a small tank may need it more often. Cesspits are different: depending on their size and how much water you use, they can need emptying every few weeks or every few months.

Signs that it's due include sinks and toilets draining slowly, gurgling pipes, bad smells around the tank, or a high-level alarm if your cesspit has one. The easiest option is a regular schedule, so it never gets that far.

What affects the price?

The cost of emptying a septic tank or cesspit depends mainly on how much waste there is to remove and how easy the tank is to reach. A tank at the end of a long drive, or one that needs its pipes jetting as well, takes longer than one next to the road.

Questions answered

Septic tank and cesspit emptying FAQs

How do I know when my septic tank needs emptying?

The usual warning signs are slow-draining sinks and toilets, gurgling pipes, a smell around the tank or drainage field, or wet patches in the garden. If you're not sure when it was last done, it's worth booking an empty and starting a regular schedule from there.

Can you empty my tank in an emergency?

Yes. We run emergency call-outs 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. While you wait, cut your water use right down: no baths, showers, washing machines or dishwashers, and flush as little as possible. Then call 03333 233566.

What is a waste transfer note and do I need one?

It's a record of what waste was taken away, who took it and where it went. Householders have a legal duty to make sure their waste goes to a registered waste carrier, so it's worth keeping the note we give you after every empty.

I don't know where my tank is. Can you find it?

Often, yes. Tell us what you know when you book, such as any manhole covers or where the drains seem to run. If it's well hidden, we can use CCTV and drain tracing to find the tank and the pipes leading to it.

My cesspit fills up very quickly. Is that normal?

Cesspits do fill quickly because nothing drains out of them. But if yours is filling much faster than it used to, rainwater or groundwater may be getting in, or the tank may be damaged. A survey can find out which, so you're not paying for more empties than you need.

Can I go on a regular emptying schedule?

Yes. Many of our customers around Horsham have their tank emptied on a regular cycle, and our office will get in touch when the next one is due.
