Pump Station Servicing & Repairs in Haslemere

Hillside homes, private drives and small developments around Haslemere kept pumping, with regular servicing, repairs and wet well cleaning.

In a town built across steep hills, gravity doesn’t always work in your favour. Around Haslemere, Hindhead and Beacon Hill, plenty of houses stand below the lane outside, so their waste has to be pumped up to the sewer in the road. Others have basements, or have been extended downhill, which leaves part of the drainage lower than the rest. Shottermill sits on the side of the Wey valley, west of the town centre.

A small pump station handles that lift. It’s usually a buried chamber with one or two pumps, a float switch, an alarm and a control panel nearby. When any one of those fails, waste can back up into the lowest toilet or drain in the house. Because the station is often hidden in a flower bed or under a lid in the drive, it tends to be forgotten until the alarm sounds.

Our engineers service and repair these stations across the Haslemere area, our tankers clean and jet the chambers, and the phone is answered at any hour. If a pump has failed, we can usually replace it.

What's included

What our engineers do on site

A thorough service, recorded in writing.

  • A written report

You get a record of what we found and anything that needs attention.

  • Wet well cleaned

Rags, fat and silt are cleared out, with the chamber emptied by tanker where needed.

  • Every pump run and tested

Each pump is run and checked. On twin-pump stations we make sure both the duty and standby pumps work.

  • Alarm tested

We test the high-level alarm so it will warn you before the chamber overflows.

  • Guide rails and chains

We check the guide rails and lifting chains, so pumps can be lifted out safely when they need work.

  • Control panel checked

The panel is checked for faults, correct settings and anything likely to make it trip.

When something goes wrong

Pumping uphill on greensand slopes

The higher the lift, the harder a pump works. Homes at the bottom of long drives off the Hindhead and Grayshott roads may push sewage a long way uphill, so pumps there wear faster and non-return valves matter more. Sand and silt washed in from sandy gardens can also settle in the chamber and clog floats.

A regular service catches worn impellers, sticking floats and failing valves before they leave you without a working toilet. If the chamber needs it, we can empty and jet it on the same visit.

Who is responsible?

A pump station serving one property is the owner’s responsibility. On private estates it’s usually the management company or the residents jointly, and some stations have since been adopted by the water company.

If you’re not sure, check your deeds or management pack, or ask us and we’ll help you find out.

Questions answered

Pump station servicing FAQs

Our house in Hindhead is below the road and the pump alarm keeps going off. What should we do?

Cut back on water use straight away, so the chamber doesn’t overflow, and ring 03333 233566. A repeating alarm usually means a float is sticking or a pump is struggling to push against the lift. Most of these faults can be put right on the spot, as our vans carry the usual spares.

Who is responsible for a pump station on a private estate?

Usually the management company or the residents jointly, unless the water company has adopted it. Check your deeds or management pack, or ask us and we’ll help you find out.

What shouldn’t go down the drain to a pump station?

Wet wipes, sanitary products, cotton buds, fat and cooking oil cause most blockages. Even wipes sold as flushable can wrap around pump impellers. Keeping them out is the cheapest way to avoid call-outs.

Can you service a shared pump station on a private drive near Haslemere?

Yes. If it serves several houses and joins the public sewer, check first whether the water company took it over in 2016. If it’s still private, we can service it on behalf of all the owners and send one report, so nobody has to chase the others.

The pump station alarm is going off. What should I do?

Stop using water as much as you can and call us on 03333 233566. Don’t open the chamber yourself. Tell us what the control panel shows, and we’ll come out to find the fault.

Why do the pumps keep tripping?

Common causes are wipes and rags wrapping around the impellers, worn pumps, damp in the kiosk or a fault in the panel. A service usually finds the cause, and we’ll explain how to stop it happening again.
