Pump Station Servicing & Repairs in Guildford

Pump stations at riverside homes, private roads, flats and business sites in Guildford, serviced, repaired and emptied by our own engineers and tankers.

Guildford grew up along the River Wey, and some homes and buildings sit too low for their drains to fall to the sewer by gravity. A pump station lifts the flow up to the public sewer or on to a treatment plant. You’ll find them under houses set below the road, at riverside flats, in buildings with basements, and serving small groups of homes on private roads.

Business sites rely on them too. Industrial units, offices and research buildings on the edge of the town can have pumped drainage, and when it fails the toilets and kitchens for a whole site can be out of action. For managing agents and facilities teams, a planned service costs far less than an emergency.

Around Guildford we carry out planned services and repairs, clean out chambers using our own jetting tankers, and respond to alarms day and night. When a chamber is nearly full, a tanker can draw it down first so the engineer has time to work safely.

What's included

Inside a pump station service

The checks that stop most call-outs before they happen.

  • Guide rails and chains

We check the guide rails and lifting chains, so pumps can be lifted out safely when they need work.

  • Control panel checked

The panel is checked for faults, correct settings and anything likely to make it trip.

  • Run times and starts

We look at how often the pumps start and how long they run, which can show leaks, infiltration or wear.

  • Kiosk and wiring

The kiosk, cables and connections are checked for damage, damp and wear.

  • Alarm tested

We test the high-level alarm so it will warn you before the chamber overflows.

  • Floats and brackets

Floats are checked for free movement, and their brackets and chains for wear and corrosion.

Breakdowns and desilting

Low ground beside the Wey

The Wey has flooded parts of Guildford more than once. On Christmas Eve 2013 it spilled into Millmead, closed Walnut Tree Close and pushed river water back up through drains in nearby streets. When the river is that high, water finds its way into pump chambers, the pumps run far longer than they should, and a flooded kiosk can trip the control panel.

If your station sits on low ground near the river, have the floats, alarm and valves checked before winter. The van carries spare floats, pumps and panel parts for the usual faults, so a second trip often isn’t needed.

Planned servicing

Most domestic pump stations are serviced every six or twelve months, and busier stations on estates or business sites more often. A regular visit catches worn parts and build-up before they cause a breakdown.

We’ll remind you when the next service is due.

Clearmasters Ltd did a great job of servicing and emptying our sewage treatment plant. The team turned up on time, were very polite, efficient and gave me lots of advice on maintenance. The office team are extremely helpful also. I'd thoroughly recommend them.

Questions answered

Your pump station questions answered

Our private road in Guildford shares a pump station. Who looks after it?

That depends on your deeds. In October 2016 many shared private pump stations connected to the public sewer were transferred to the water companies, so ask Thames Water first. If yours wasn’t transferred, it’s usually down to the residents or a management company, and we can put it on a planned service for you.

How often does a pump station need servicing?

Most domestic pump stations are serviced every six or twelve months. Busier stations on estates or commercial sites usually need more frequent visits. We’ll recommend an interval after the first service.

Why do the pumps keep tripping?

Common causes are wipes and rags wrapping around the impellers, worn pumps, damp in the kiosk or a fault in the panel. A service usually finds the cause, and we’ll explain how to stop it happening again.

Can you service pump stations at business units around Slyfield?

Yes. We service and repair pump stations at industrial units, offices and other business sites around Guildford, including the Slyfield area. We work to your site’s induction and permit rules, and our confined space trained engineers can enter the wet well safely when a repair needs it.

Can you replace pumps and control panels?

Yes. We supply and fit replacement pumps, floats and control panels, and our confined space teams handle any work inside the chamber.

What shouldn’t go down the drain to a pump station?

Wet wipes, sanitary products, cotton buds, fat and cooking oil cause most blockages. Even wipes sold as flushable can wrap around pump impellers. Keeping them out is the cheapest way to avoid call-outs.
