Sand on the heaths, clay further south
On the sandy heath around Pirbright and Worplesdon, a drainage field usually takes water readily. The catch is that the same open ground lets poorly settled effluent travel further, so keeping solids out of the field matters even more here. On the London Clay south of Worplesdon you get the opposite problem: fields stay wet all winter and the tank backs up after heavy rain.
If your field is giving trouble, it pays to look before anyone digs. A septic tank survey shows where the outlet runs and what state it’s in.
