Sewage Treatment Plant Servicing in Pulborough

Servicing and repairs for treatment plants on homes, farms and conversions around Pulborough and in the South Downs National Park.

Pulborough lies right on the northern edge of the South Downs National Park, and several of the villages around it, including Fittleworth, Bury and Coldwaltham, are inside it. In the countryside here, new homes and conversions that can’t reach a sewer usually go in with a sewage treatment plant rather than a septic tank.

The river valleys make that a sensible choice. A plant cleans the waste far more thoroughly before releasing it, which matters close to the Arun, the Rother and the wildlife sites along them. It also gives owners more say over where the treated water goes, because it can discharge to a flowing stream where a septic tank can’t.

A plant is a piece of machinery, though, and it only does all that while it’s looked after. Our engineers service blowers, pumps and control panels, check the quality of the final effluent and arrange desludging, carrying the parts that fail most often. You get a written report after every visit.

What's included

Inside a treatment plant service

A thorough check of the air, the pumps, the panel and the sludge.

  • Wear parts spotted early

Worn diaphragms, noisy bearings and tired pumps are flagged before they fail.

  • Blower and air supply

We check the blower is running correctly and that air is reaching the diffusers, because that’s what keeps the bacteria working.

  • Baffles and pipework

We check the baffles, inlet and outlet are clear and undamaged, so waste moves through the chambers properly.

  • Lid and access

The lid, seals and fixings are checked so the plant stays safe and watertight.

  • High-level alarm

The alarm is tested so it will warn you if the plant starts to back up.

  • Filters and media

Where your plant has filters or media, we check they aren’t blocked or clogged.

Keeping your plant working

Protected wetlands along the Arun

The Arun Valley is protected for its wetland birds and wildlife, and Pulborough Brooks is part of the protected area. The General Binding Rules don’t cover discharges close to sites like this: within 50 metres for discharges to ground, and within 500 metres for discharges to a stream or river.

If your plant is near the brooks, it may need an environmental permit rather than relying on the general rules. We can check the plant is working properly and point you towards the right advice if a permit could apply. The Environment Agency can confirm whether yours needs one.

Repairs on the first visit where we can

The parts that fail most are the blower, pumps, floats, alarms and control panels. Our engineers carry the most common parts, so many repairs are finished on the first visit instead of another day.

If the alarm is sounding, the plant has gone quiet or it has started to smell, call us and we’ll send an engineer to find the fault.

What our customers say

★★★★★

First of all the engineer attended site exactly on time and the slot had been within a couple of days of phoning. The required work was completed and the motor realigned to prevent future wear. The engineer also provided advice and a written report. I was not only impressed with the attention to detail, but the rates for the work were very reasonable - just parts (with a 12month warranty) and labour. There were no callout or other unfair charges on top.

I've used Clearmasters for at least 10 years and always find them reliable, helpful, knowledgable and great at what is a really unpleasant job! I won't use anyone else.

Questions answered

Treatment plant questions

Do the rules change for treatment plants in the South Downs National Park?

The General Binding Rules are the same inside and outside the park. What changes things is being close to a protected site, such as the wetlands along the Arun. Planning decisions in the park are made by the South Downs National Park Authority, so check with them if a new plant is part of a wider building project.

How often should a treatment plant be serviced?

Most domestic plants should be serviced at least once a year, and some makers recommend every six months. Your plant’s manual will say, or we can tell you when we see it.

Can you get my plant working on the same visit?

Often, yes. Our engineers carry the most common parts, such as blowers and pumps, so many repairs are done there and then. For less common parts we’ll order them and come back.

My plant near the Arun floods in winter. Will it be damaged?

Flood water getting into a plant can wash out the bacteria, swamp the blower and trip the control panel. If your plant sits on low ground near the river, make sure the blower housing and electrics are above likely flood levels. After any flood, book a service so we can check it’s treating properly again.

My plant smells. What does that mean?

A healthy plant shouldn’t smell much. A strong smell often means the blower has stopped and the bacteria have died off, or the sludge is overdue for removal. Call us and we’ll check it.

Can I take over a plant when I buy a house?

Yes, and it’s worth booking a service soon after you move in, so you know its condition and get a fresh service record. Ask the seller for any manuals and past records too.
