Pump Station Maintenance & Repairs in Caterham

Servicing, repairs and emptying for pump stations and basement pumps in Caterham, Whyteleafe and the valleys around them.

Caterham is a town of hills and dry valleys. Caterham Valley sits in the bottom, Caterham-on-the-Hill is up on the ridge, and many roads in between climb steeply. Plenty of homes are built into the slope, with lower floors, garages and garden rooms well below the level of the sewer in the road.

Pump stations solve that problem by lifting waste up to where it can flow away. Around Caterham we see them at houses with basements or lower ground floors, at infill developments on sloping plots, and at commercial premises where toilets or kitchens sit below the drain. They work quietly for years, until a float sticks or a pump wears out. Most are small single-pump units, though some developments share a larger twin-pump station.

Servicing, repairs and emptying are all handled by our own team, and we answer the phone around the clock when a high-level alarm starts sounding. Our engineers are trained and certificated for confined space entry, so work inside a chamber is done safely.

What's included

What a pump station service covers

From the kiosk to the bottom of the wet well.

You get a record of what we found and anything that needs attention.

  • Alarm tested

We test the high-level alarm so it will warn you before the chamber overflows.

If wipes and fat are causing trouble, we’ll explain what to tell residents or staff.

  • Kiosk and wiring

The kiosk, cables and connections are checked for damage, damp and wear.

When something goes wrong

The Caterham Bourne and rising groundwater

The Caterham Bourne is a chalk stream that stays dry most years. After a very wet winter the groundwater rises and it flows down the valley through Whyteleafe and Kenley, as it did in early 2014 when roads and homes along the valley flooded.

When the water table is that high, basements and pump chambers on the valley floor can take in groundwater and run far more often than usual. A pump that is already worn may not keep up. Having the station serviced in autumn, before the wet months, is a sensible precaution for homes near the bottom of the valley.

Emptying and desilting

Silt, grit and fat settle at the bottom of the wet well over time and can clog pumps and floats. We empty and desilt pump stations with our own tankers, jetting the chamber clean so the pumps have a clear run.

It’s often worth doing this at the same time as a service.

Questions answered

Pump station questions

Can groundwater from the Bourne affect my pump station in Caterham Valley or Whyteleafe?

It can. When the chalk fills up after a wet winter, groundwater can seep into chambers and drains on the valley floor. The pumps then run harder and for longer than they were designed to. A service before winter, with the floats and alarm tested, helps make sure they cope.

Do you work on pump stations for businesses?

Yes. We service and repair pump stations at business parks, farms, holiday sites and commercial premises as well as homes and estates.

How often does a pump station need servicing?

Most domestic pump stations are serviced every six or twelve months. Busier stations on estates or commercial sites usually need more frequent visits. We’ll recommend an interval after the first service.

Why does a house on a Caterham hillside need a pump?

If the sewer runs along a road above the house, or a basement sits below the drain, waste can’t flow away by gravity. A pump station collects it and pushes it up to the sewer. On Caterham’s steep streets that arrangement isn’t unusual, especially where homes have been extended downwards.

Do you empty pump stations?

Yes. We empty and desilt wet wells with our own tankers, either on their own or as part of a service visit.

Can you set up a regular service contract?

Yes. We set up planned servicing for homeowners, management companies and businesses, with reminders and a written report after every visit.
