Treatment Plant Servicing & Repairs in Uckfield

Servicing, repairs and desludging for sewage treatment plants at homes and rural businesses around Uckfield and the High Weald.

Much of the countryside around Uckfield is in the High Weald National Landscape, including Ashdown Forest to the north. New homes, extensions and conversions here that can’t join the sewer usually get a sewage treatment plant, and many older septic tanks have been swapped for one.

The area is full of small streams that run down to the Uck and on to the Ouse. A treatment plant can discharge its cleaned water to one of them, provided it normally flows all year, which is often easier than finding ground that will take it on the clay layers. Under the General Binding Rules, a septic tank can’t do that.

To stay within those rules, the plant has to be maintained to the manufacturer’s instructions by someone competent. Our engineers service every common make, test the blower and pumps, check the control panel and alarms, and look at what’s coming out of the outlet. If the plant needs desludging, one of our tankers can do it.

What's included

What we check at a service

The parts that keep a plant treating properly, and the ones that tend to fail.

  • Wear parts spotted early

Worn diaphragms, noisy bearings and tired pumps are flagged before they fail.

  • Baffles and pipework

We check the baffles, inlet and outlet are clear and undamaged, so waste moves through the chambers properly.

  • Control panel

We check the panel, its settings and any warning lights, and make sure it’s safe.

  • Blower and air supply

We check the blower is running correctly and that air is reaching the diffusers, because that’s what keeps the bacteria working.

  • Outfall and drainage field

We look at where the treated water goes, so problems with the outlet or drainage field are picked up early.

  • Lid and access

The lid, seals and fixings are checked so the plant stays safe and watertight.

Plants close to Ashdown Forest

Ashdown Forest is protected for its heathland birds and habitats. The General Binding Rules don’t apply to a discharge to ground within 50 metres of a site like this, or to a stream within 500 metres of it. That can affect homes on the edge of the forest around Nutley, Fairwarp and Maresfield.

If that’s you, an environmental permit may be needed. A plant that is serviced regularly and kept in good order is the best starting point either way, and we provide written service records you can keep. Those records are also useful if you ever sell the house.

Desludging

Every treatment plant builds up sludge, and it needs removing before it goes beyond what the plant can hold, usually at least once a year. Leave it too long and solids can carry over into the final chamber and out to your drainage field or watercourse.

We can desludge on the same visit as your service, using our own tankers.

They were able to come to clean out my septic tank in a short timeframe. They were careful about not damaging the plants in the area around the septic tank and the technician was polite and helpful. Thank you for your help.

Questions answered

Treatment plant questions

Can my treatment plant near Uckfield discharge to a ghyll stream?

Usually it can, if the stream normally flows throughout the year, the plant is working properly and you’re not close to a protected site like Ashdown Forest. Some small ghylls dry up in a hot summer, which can cause problems. We can check where your outlet goes and whether it fits the rules.

Do you install new treatment plants?

Yes. If your old plant or septic tank needs replacing, we can quote for a new treatment plant and, if needed, a new drainage field.

Can you get my plant working on the same visit?

Often, yes. Our engineers carry the most common parts, such as blowers and pumps, so many repairs are done there and then. For less common parts we’ll order them and come back.

Do you look after treatment plants at rural businesses around Uckfield?

Yes. Plants serving holiday lets, farm offices and workshops take a different load from a family home, and it often varies through the year. We service them in the same way, agree a visit frequency that suits how they’re used, and keep a written record of each service.

What’s the difference between servicing and emptying?

A service checks the mechanical and electrical parts: blower, pumps, floats, alarm and panel. Emptying, or desludging, removes the sludge that builds up. Most plants need both, and we can do them on the same visit.

Do you service my make of plant?

We service and repair the common makes, including Klargester, Conder, Marsh, Graf, Tricel and WPL Diamond. If you’re not sure what you have, send a photo of the lid or panel when you get in touch.
