Pump Station Servicing & Repairs in Dorking

Planned servicing and emergency repairs for sewage and surface water pump stations in and around Dorking.

Dorking is a hilly town. Wherever a building sits lower than the sewer or the tank it drains to, a pump station has to lift the waste up to it. That includes houses built below the level of the road, annexes at the bottom of a sloping garden, and converted barns set well back from the lane.

Pump stations also serve business units, schools, care homes and newer housing around the town, and farms where several cottages share one treatment plant. When a pump fails, the chamber can fill within hours, so it’s far better to find worn parts on a planned visit than in the middle of the night.

Our engineers hold confined space entry certificates. They test the pumps, floats and alarms, check the control panel and look for signs of wear. Every one of our tankers has jetting kit, so the wet well can be emptied and cleaned on the same visit. We also empty and clean out chambers that have been left too long between services.

What's included

Inside a pump station service

The checks that stop most call-outs before they happen.

  • Wet well cleaned

Rags, fat and silt are cleared out, with the chamber emptied by tanker where needed.

  • Every pump run and tested

Each pump is run and checked. On twin-pump stations we make sure both the duty and standby pumps work.

  • Cover and access

The chamber cover and its frame are checked so the station is safe to open and safe to walk past.

  • Advice on what goes in

If wipes and fat are causing trouble, we’ll explain what to tell residents or staff.

  • Floats and brackets

Floats are checked for free movement, and their brackets and chains for wear and corrosion.

  • Guide rails and chains

We check the guide rails and lifting chains, so pumps can be lifted out safely when they need work.

Low ground by the Mole and the Pipp Brook

The Pipp Brook runs along the north side of the High Street and meets the Mole at Pixham. Parts of Pixham, Brockham and Betchworth fall within the Environment Agency’s flood warning area for the river. If flood water gets into a pump chamber, it can swamp the pumps and trip the electrics.

If your pump station is on low ground, check that the lid seals well and the control panel sits above likely flood levels. After a flood we can empty the pump station, clear out silt and test everything before it goes back into use.

New pumps and control panels

When a pump is worn out or a panel keeps tripping, we can supply and fit a replacement. We’ll explain why it failed, so the new one lasts.

Our confined space teams handle any work inside the chamber safely.

Questions answered

Your pump station questions answered

Why do so many homes around Dorking need a pump?

It comes down to the slopes. Dorking sits where the North Downs meet the greensand hills, so houses below the road, or with drains running away from the sewer, often need their waste lifted uphill. A pump station does that automatically, and its alarm tells you if it stops.

Do you work on pump stations for businesses?

Yes. We service and repair pump stations at business parks, farms, holiday sites and commercial premises as well as homes and estates.

Who is responsible for a pump station on a private estate?

Usually the management company or the residents jointly, unless the water company has adopted it. Check your deeds or management pack, or ask us and we’ll help you find out.

What should I do if my pump alarm goes off during a flood near the Mole?

Cut your water use straight away and keep children and pets away from the chamber. Don’t open the lid while flood water is around it. Call 03333 233566 at any hour, and we’ll pump out the chamber and check the pumps and wiring once it’s safe.

Do you empty pump stations?

Yes. We empty and desilt wet wells with our own tankers, either on their own or as part of a service visit.

The pump station alarm is going off. What should I do?

Stop using water as much as you can and call us on 03333 233566. Don’t open the chamber yourself. Tell us what the control panel shows, and we’ll come out to find the fault.
