Blocked Drains in Redhill

Terraces, takeaways and flats: we clear the blockage, then tell you where it came from.

Redhill is a busy railway town, a short drive from our office in Smallfield. The centre has restaurants, takeaways, offices and flats, and the streets around it run from Victorian terraces to large post-war and modern estates. Almost all of it is on mains drainage, so blocked drains make up much of what we do here.

Victorian terraces often share a drain run behind the houses. A blockage that shows up in one home may have started at another, and a shared section is normally the water company’s to deal with rather than yours. Before anyone is asked to pay, we check where the blockage actually is.

In the town centre, fat is a common cause. With so many food outlets, grease goes down the sink hot, sets in the pipe and slowly narrows it. We clear the pipe and can empty the grease trap as part of the same visit. Our engineers are on call around the clock.

A takeaway that cannot use its sink loses a night’s trade. We clear the drain, and we can empty the grease trap on the same visit so the cause is dealt with.

In a terrace where several houses share a run, we find which section is blocked. Our drain unblocking page explains how we go about it.

Hills and valleys: why drains differ a mile apart

The hills around Redhill are sandy and drain well, while the valleys are clay and drain slowly. Two homes a mile apart can have quite different drainage.

In villages such as South Nutfield, Bletchingley and Outwood, some homes are on tanks. We can clear the pipe, empty the tank and look at how the system is coping. The Redhill page has more.

Questions answered

Blocked drain FAQs for Redhill

I live in a Victorian terrace. Is a shared drain my problem?

Since October 2011 the water company has looked after shared drains and the pipe outside a property’s boundary. Pipes serving only your home, inside the boundary, are yours. We establish where the blockage is before anything else.

Why does my kitchen drain keep blocking?

Fat, oil and grease are the usual cause. They go down as a liquid, then cool and coat the pipe. A build-up of that narrows the pipe until it blocks. Clearing it by jetting removes it, and for a business a regularly emptied grease trap helps.

Can you clear a blocked drain at a restaurant or takeaway?

Yes, and we can empty the grease trap and clear gullies at the same visit. Tell us your opening hours when you ring so we can plan around them.

Do I have to expect a dug-up garden?

Not for clearing a blockage. We use chambers and gullies and a jetting hose. If a camera finds a broken pipe we will go through the repair options before anything is dug.

I live in a village near Redhill without mains drainage. Can you help?

Yes. We empty septic tanks and cesspits and service treatment plants, and we can clear the pipes leading to them.

How do I know whether it is a blockage or a full tank?

A single slow drain is often a blockage. Every drain in the house running slowly, gurgling or smelling, or a wet patch in the garden, can mean a tank that needs emptying. Describe what you see and we will help work it out.

Do you do CCTV surveys after clearing?

We can. Once the pipe is clear the camera can see its condition. See our Redhill CCTV drain surveys page.
