The basics
How do you choose the right drain repair?
The repair depends on what is wrong with the pipe, and you can’t tell that from the surface. A CCTV drain survey shows the damage, where it is and how far it runs, and that decides the repair.
If the pipe is still in line and the damage is cracks, roots or minor joint movement, drain lining can often repair it without digging. If it has collapsed, sunk or been badly displaced, excavation and replacement is the proper fix.
Damage at a chamber is a different job. We deal with that under manhole repairs and installations, and roots are cleared with root cutting before any repair is chosen.
Not sure the drain is yours to repair? Our guide to drain and sewer responsibility explains who looks after what.
Your options
Repairs we carry out
Each page explains the repair, what is involved and when it suits.
How it works
From first call to finished repair
Survey the drain
We jet where needed so the camera can see the pipe, then survey it.
Explain what we found
We tell you what is wrong in plain English and what the realistic options are.
Agree the repair
Lining, excavation or a fitting repair, with a timescale and quote.
Carry out the repair
The damaged pipe is lined or replaced and the ground reinstated where we have dug.
Check the result
We run a final camera check so you can see the drain is sound.
Why act
Don’t wait for a damaged drain to get worse
A broken drain rarely mends itself. Waste leaks into the ground, roots follow it in and the damage spreads along the pipe.
A repair done early is usually smaller than one done after the ground has washed away or the drain has collapsed.
Signs your drain may need repair
- Blockages that keep coming back in the same place
- Smells around the drain or garden
- Damp patches or ground that is sinking
- Rats around the property
- Slow drains throughout the house
Why Clearmasters
Why choose Clearmasters?
We only recommend the repair the survey supports. If lining will do, we say so. If the pipe has to be dug out, we explain why and keep the disruption to the minimum.

Questions answered
Drain repair FAQs
Do I need a survey before a drain repair?
In almost every case, yes. A CCTV survey shows what is wrong and where, so the repair matches the damage instead of being guessed.
Can every damaged drain be lined?
No. Cracks, root damage and small movement at joints can often be lined. A collapsed, crushed or badly displaced pipe usually has to be dug out and replaced.
Who is responsible for a damaged drain?
It depends where the damage is. Drains that serve only your property are usually yours to maintain. Shared drains and pipes outside the boundary have been the water company’s responsibility since October 2011. Our responsibility guide explains the detail.
Is a damaged drain always an emergency?
Not always, but it should not be left. A collapsed or leaking drain gets worse over time, and a survey shows what can be planned and what cannot wait.
Do you repair drains at businesses as well as homes?
Yes. We work for homeowners, hotels, pubs, restaurants and other commercial sites.
